US President Donald Trump on Monday signed an executive order that would impose fresh sanctions on Iran, amid increased tensions between the long-time foes.

Tensions remain high between between Iran and the United States after President Trump said on Friday that he called off a military strike to retaliate for Iran's downing of an unmanned U.S. drone out of concern it would have been a disproportionate response. The sanctions work to deny Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and his close aides access to money and support.

The Trump administration wants to force Tehran to open talks on its nuclear and missile programs and its activities in the region.
