Cricket World Cup: South Africa v West Indies match rained off

Rain spoils West Indies World Cup match

South Africa will now face Afghanistan this Sunday at 12.30am while West Indies will take on England 9.30pm this Friday.

It was the latest blow for South Africa captain Du Plessis, who had presided over three successive defeats before the weather ruined the West Indies game. The top four sides will qualify for the semi-finals.

That leaves the Windies on three points, with a resounding win against Pakistan in their first match followed by a 15-run loss to Australia last week.

South Africa captain Faf du Plessis insisted his troubled side could still turn their fortunes around.

Faf du Plessis continued, "It was just a conversation, a phone call the night before the team got announced". It's like Test cricket.

"Generally when you are chasing, it always favours the team batting second", he said.

"When you're in and dominating, you have to try and really make the most of it and I think sometimes we don't get that balance right".

"Lungi will be ready for the next match which is important for us - we are looking for a bowling attack that is as strong as possible".

This means a total of 45 matches will be played, with each team playing a total of nine matches.

"If we do that, and the results start one by one happening, then this team will get a lot of confidence from that for the later stages". Once you do that and that part of the game has any resistance, then your game plan falls.

Shortly after Markram's dismissal, the rain came and play was suspended for a lengthy period of time.

Only 7.3 overs were played in Southampton, with the West Indies restricting South Africa to 29-2 thanks to a pair of Sheldon Cottrell wickets before the rain set in. Cottrell caught Eden Markram (5) at the hands of wicketkeeper Shai Hope.

We don't mind giving away runs.

"We are hoping he pulls up alright".

"In that situation the blame game can start but I do honesty believe we've been very far away from that".

Rain is also forecast on Tuesday at Bristol, where Bangladesh meet Sri Lanka, and on Wednesday at Taunton, where Australia play Pakistan. But along this news, South Africa suffered another setback on Monday when their clash against West Indies was washed out.
