Starr, who was 85, suffered a major stroke in 2014 and his health had been failing in the years since.

"We are saddened to note the passing of our husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Bart Starr", his family said in statement. "He battled with courage and determination to transcend the serious stroke he suffered in September 2014, but his most recent illness was too much to overcome", his family says in a statement.

The Green Bay Packers will be one of the showcase teams for the NFL's 100th anniversary season.

After losing to the Eagles in the 1960 NFL Championship Game, the Packers never lost another postseason contest with Starr at the helm. But before them, Starr was the one who helped Green Bay earn their "Titletown" nickname.

Until Brett Favre came along, Starr was known as the best Packer ever.

Starr led one of sports' most famous dynasties, the 1960s Packers, to five National Football League championships.

In perhaps the most memorable moment of his career, Starr quarterbacked the Packers to a 21-17 victory against the Dallas Cowboys in the famous "Ice Bowl" 1967 NFL Championship, a game played in -16 degree weather and a wind chill that fell to -46 degrees below zero.

He was named MVP of both Super Bowls, and went on to win another three titles with the team, receiving the honor of NFL MVP in 1966. He found his greatness under the leadership of Vince Lombardi.

After football, Starr, became a successful businessman in Birmingham, Alabama, not far from his hometown of Montgomery, where he was born on January 9, 1934. It's no surprise that Favre thought so highly of Starr, as the two could certainly relate to one another. "That just fills our hearts with joy to know that he was able to have the kind of year that we hoped he would but were not sure that he would". The even-mannered Starr was the flawless complement for the fiery Lombardi.

Two weeks later in sunny Miami, the Packers defeated the AFL champion Raiders 33-14 in Lombardi's final game as head coach of the Packers.
