Donald Trump says he favours abortion in cases of incest, rape or threat to mother’s life

US President Donald Trump has outlined his "strongly pro-life" views on abortion amid controversy over strict new laws passed in several states.

This remark is the first comment that Donald Trump has made regarding the highly-disputed abortion issue, as earlier this week the Alabama State Senate passed a Conservative-led abortion bill, making almost all abortions illegal except when there is a "serious health risk" for the mother and when the unborn child has a "lethal anomaly".

Trump appeared to suggest Alabama lawmakers had gone too far in a series of tweets late Saturday in which he described himself as "strongly Pro-Life, with the three exceptions - Rape, Incest and protecting the Life of the mother".

Disagreement among Republicans is becoming apparent over Alabama's law, and Mr Trump sees Democrats taking advantage of that.

Earlier this year the governors of Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and OH signed bills banning terminations if an embryonic heartbeat could be detected.

The most recent poll on the issue by the Kaiser Family Foundation, conducted in late April, found that two-thirds of the public wants Roe v. Wade, the 1973 decision legalizing abortion, to remain in place. "We must stick together and Win for Life in 2020", Trump went on to say.

The court on Monday took no action on appeals seeking to revive two abortion restrictions enacted in IN in 2016. The rule keeps abortion care out of reach for many low-income and marginalized women who rely on Medicaid and the Indian Health Service for their health care.

Two speakers at the rally on the Capitol steps shared their stories of having an abortion, including a woman who came out of the crowd to describe the abortion she had after being raped at a party at age 18.

"I believe that there ought to be exceptions". At a time when Alabama is struggling to fund its schools, health care system, and infrastructure, we can not afford this costly and self-destructive attack on women that will ultimately be paid for with taxpayer dollars. They want to turn back the clock, outlaw abortion, and deny women access to reproductive healthcare. Georgia and OH have also passed abortion bans in recent weeks which prohibit women from obtaining abortion care after six weeks of pregnancy - before many women even know they are pregnant.

Planned Parenthood and the American Civil Liberties Union say they plan to sue the state to try to block the law's implementation.
