Sony's PlayStation Apparently Wasn't Aware of Its Partnership With Microsoft

Though the move is unsurprising in hindsight, many are rightly not used to seeing Microsoft and Sony team up for, well, anything.

Microsoft recently announced that they would be teaming up with Sony for the next-gen consoles' cloud streaming abilities.

A Sony spokesman confirmed that negotiations began past year and were reportedly handled by Sony's senior management in Tokyo with no involvement of the PlayStation team. The partnership isn't simply on way either as Microsoft will benefit from Sony's own advances in image-processing technology that will see the two companies share and develop new technologies.

Sony has already spun its 2012 purchase of streaming gaming company Gaikai into over 700,000 subscribers for its cloud-based PlayStation Now service, which launched in 2015.

Negotiations between Microsoft and Sony began in 2018, a spokesperson for Sony said. Sony will be utilizing Microsoft's cloud service, which makes me question what the PlayStation creator is bringing to the table.

"Sony feels threatened by this trend and the mighty Google, and has chose to leave its network infrastructure build-up to Microsoft", Asymmetric Advisors strategist Amir Anvarzadeh told Bloomberg.

However, a good streaming service is nothing if you don't have any games, "Exclusive content remains key", said Piers Harding-Rolls, IHS Markit's head of games research.

For what it's worth, the press release announcing the deal between Microsoft and Sony only mentions PlayStation by name once.

Sony's other streaming service, PlayStation Network, allows gamers to engage in multiplayer gamers on PS4 consoles and is now hosted by Amazon Web Services.
