Tencent Suspends Blockbuster Video Game 'PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds' in China

China replaces PUBG with patriotic game

With so many players logging in to play the game each day, Tencent needed an alternative and that comes in the form of Game for Peace.

While PUBG Mobile will still keep the same shoot-the-gun-at-the-guy gameplay as before, killing an enemy no longer leaves them dead on the floor.

In China, PUBG Mobile has a user base of about 70 million and permission to monitise the game could have helped Shenzhen-based Tencent generate around $1.5 billion through in-app purchases which did not work out as intended.

In a post on the game's official account on China's Twitter-like Weibo platform, Tencent said it would end testing for PUBG.

Some Weibo users said on starting Game for Peace, they found themselves at a place in the game that strongly resembled the place they left off in PUBG, complete with PUBG gaming history. "The gameplay, the background, the graphic design, and the characters, they're nearly the same", she said.

Tencent claims however that "they are very different genres of games". It was named as one of the highest-grossing titles on the Steam video game store in 2018.

The Chinese Internet giant sent a message to the game players on Wednesday announcing the game was "removed for maintenance". Now, instead of dying, characters fall down briefly, then get back up and wave goodbye.
