Country House declared winner of Kentucky Derby after Maximum Security is disqualified

Bettors who put down money on Maximum Security winning, placing or showing at the Derby lost $9 million, according to ESPN. Code of Honor won 2nd place. In case you missed it, Maximum Security won the race, but soon after was disqualified for making contact with another horse. This means the second place finisher, Country House, became the Derby victor.

While most assumed the victor wouldn't change, the stewards threw a massive curveball at the world by disqualifying Maximum Security, handing the win to Country House, which went off as a 65-1 long shot.

Mott had instructed Prat to make that call shortly after jockey Jose Ortiz arrived on Mott's other charge, Tacitus, who wound up third after finishing fourth originally.

Two jockeys - including Flavian Prat, who was riding Country House - agreed, and after a 22-minute review, the three stewards at Louisville's historic Churchill Downs racecourse did, too.

"If this was a maiden claimer on a weekday the victor would come down".

The result now stands that Country House, a 65-1 outsider, as the victor of the 2019 Kentucky Derby. It's the biggest upset in Kentucky Derby history since Donerail overcame even bigger odds to win the 1913 race.

The disqualification highlights vast differences in how stewards in jurisdictions around the world handle interference.

Lawson says in most countries, Maximum Security's victory would likely have been upheld because officials have more discretion to determine where each horse would have finished had the interference not occurred.

The total handle for all Maximum Security win/place/show bets was almost $9 million at TwinSpires. Shortly before the race began, the track was downgraded from fast to sloppy.

Maximum Security co-owner Gary West strongly disagreed with the ruling and said he is considering several options, which could include appealing the stewards' decision.

Instead, Maximum Security was demoted to 17th of the 19 horses.

Cyclone Fani hits India's east coast after huge evacuation operation
Odisha power secretary Hemant Sharma told reporters in Bhubaneswar that scores of electricity towers were destroyed on Friday. Neighbouring West Bengal state escaped substantial damage, but authorities moved almost 45,000 people to safer locations.

Chief Steward Barbara Borden explained it to the media. Shortly after the conclusion of the race, an objection was issued on behalf of second place Country House, which claimed the horse was impeded by a sudden lane change from Maximum Security. "Those horses were all affected by the interference".
