Kim Jong-un has met Vladimir Putin at the first ever summit between the two during a highly anticipated two-day visit to Russian Federation.

They held meetings at the Far Eastern Federal University campus at Russky Island off Vladivostok, Russia.

As a result of Thursday's summit, Putin and Kim "reached an agreement that Russia will definitely be one of the global guarantors of any accord between North Korea and the United States", Andrey Fyodorov, Russia's former deputy foreign minister and an expert on North Korea, told Al Jazeera.

"If the Hanoi summit had gone well, North Korea would not have needed to visit Russian Federation", said Kim Sung-han, dean of Korea University's Graduate School of International Studies in Seoul and a former vice minister at the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, referring to Kim's failed meeting with Trump in February.

The department, which used to handle only relations with the South, grew greatly in importance when Kim Yong-chol took charge of diplomacy with the USA and arranged two summits with Trump.

All of Kim's appearances are watched closely for such signs, in part because the public does not often get unscripted looks at the North Korean leader.

Ahead of the talks, Putin's foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov said that Russian Federation will seek to "consolidate the positive trends" stemming from Trump-Kim meetings.

Kim arrived in Vladivostok Wednesday aboard an armored train, telling Russian state television he was hoping his first visit to Russia would "successful and useful".

Mr Putin said North Korea's leader was "fairly open" and had "talked freely on all issues that were on the agenda".

"But I think it's not easy for Russian Federation and China to provide North Korea with practical assistance that leads to the inflow of dollars".

Mr Kim wants the United States to ease the sanctions to reciprocate for some partial disarmament steps he took previous year.

Pyongyang has long viewed the exercises as a provocation and a rehearsal for an invasion of North Korea. If it weren't for the Soviet Union, North Korea would not exist - Communist Moscow supplied its tiny vassal with foodstuffs, fuel and diplomatic protection for decades.
