Sarah Sanders, the White House press secretary, has defended claims she repeatedly made to reporters in 2017 regarding Donald Trump's firing of then Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey - despite admitting to investigators for the special counsel Robert Mueller that they had "no basis in fact".
But while the coverage of her comments include sharp criticism - including calls for her to resign - it's actually being more generous to Sanders than she deserves.
Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr appeared to brief the White House counsel's office about the targets of the FBI's Russian Federation investigation in March 2017, special counsel Robert Mueller's report says.

Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, which has the power to launch impeachment proceedings. She says there has been a lot of political spin on the report and she would like an unredacted version released.
"If you look at what's in quotations from me, it's that and it's that it was 'in the heat of the moment, ' meaning that it wasn't a scripted talking point", Sanders said.
But while the report makes clear that she was lying, Sanders never admitted to that.
He added: "I just think that it just shows how ridiculous the coverage has become, and "PieGate" certainly should be over".
Outrage is growing after the redacted version of the Mueller report revealed Sarah Huckabee Sanders admitted to lying to reporters, with the report stating point blank her lies were "based on nothing."

During the press briefing on May 11, 2018, Sanders said she had "heard from countless members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation that are grateful and thankful for the president's decision". She claimed to have heard from "countless" former and current Federal Bureau of Investigation agents.
"Let me tell you something, she's been making this pie for years... makes them for friends, but here's the warning that I would issue". She repeatedly made outlandish statements to the press that were not founded on anything and elaborated on her fabulation when questioned, seething with sanctimonious indignation all the while. "A reporter gave her the chance to walk it back". He asked, "Why couldn't you acknowledge that what you said then was not true?" "I have to have security because of being called fake and a loser and all sorts of things from that White House".
Sanders, no longer under oath, doubled down on her original lie in her interview with Good Morning America. "My people see you and will do the same for you!".
Although Mueller concluded that the president's efforts were "mostly unsuccessful" because "the persons who surrounded the president declined to carry out his orders or accede to his requests", one individual was singled out by Mueller for less-honorable conduct: White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who on at least three occasions perpetuated a false narrative.
