The Cedar Rapids school district sent a message to parents and staff giving basic information on measles, answers to frequently asked questions, and also laid out a procedure IF the virus was discovered locally. All regions around the world are experiencing "sustained rises" in measles cases, according to WHO, which says a number of countries are now dealing with deadly outbreaks.

The largest and most recent outbreak consisted of seven cases in Shelby County in 2016.

As a measles epidemic continues to spread, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced a state of emergency and mandated residents of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg at the center of the outbreak to get vaccinated for the viral disease.

The CDC said the outbreaks are linked to worldwide travelers who brought measles back from other countries such as Israel, Ukraine, and the Philippines, where large measles outbreaks are ongoing.

This number will increase for the long bank holiday weekend, and protests could prevent families reuniting for an Easter break. All roads remained open during the demonstration, which is part of a two-week campaign that began in central London on Monday.

As Dr Pierre Weicherding from the ministry's sanitary inspection unit explains, measles is one of the most risky children's diseases worldwide and is highly infectious.

The news of the flight attendant's severe illness follows reports of a man on a trip from NY who was unknowingly infected with the measles, and after traveling to MI, spread the virus to 38 other people there.

The report says that the woman only had one measles vaccine as a child, when two are recommended. The vaccine protects against three diseases: measles, mumps, and rubella.

People who did not attend any of these locations during the above dates and times are not considered at risk for this measles exposure. That's how common measles was. Adult vaccines, including measles, are offered for a fee.

An estimate of 600,000 to 900,000 people received the outdated vaccines when they came out between 1963 to 1967.

"With ninety-percent effectiveness, the measles immunization is the best way to keep from getting and spreading measles", said Muntu Davis, MD, MPH, Los Angeles County Health Officer. Medical professionals say all children should have their first measles vaccinations at age 12-15 months, followed by a second dose at four to six years of age.
