Johnson took a few practice swings, but accidentally knocked the ball off of the tee.

But here's the thing: it was a practice swing, so the shot doesn't count.

After the initial shock the Englishman said Johnson saw the amusing side.

When he took the tee box on No. 13, Johnson sat two shots above the cut line. "Yeah, that was a good one there".

Carlos Sainz finished a further nine seconds back for McLaren in 14th, only ahead of Antonio Giovinazzi and the Williams drivers. He was later given the all-clear, but missed qualifying because his ruined auto could not be fixed in time. "Let Sebastian by.

Johnson, who need to make up some ground if he wants to keep pace with the rest of the field, can't keep sending wild shots into the stands and accidentally hitting the ball ten feet if he wants to stay in the hunt.

Only Johnson's pride was hurt because he was allowed to re-tee the ball without penalty because he had not meant to move it.

Johnson made the most of his second chance, hitting a 285-yard drive onto the fairway and eventually netting a birdie on the hole.

"Y'all can laugh, that's embarrassing", Johnson told his playing competitors, Ian Poulter and Matt Kuchar.

Witnesses have said at least 10 shots were fired and Scotland Yard confirmed firearms and a Taser were used. When officers arrived on the scene, a auto was "driven at them", Metropolitan Police said.

Despite the mishap, Johnson is positive that it was one-off, adding: "I don't think I could do it again if I even tried".

Unfortunately for Johnson, his weekend prospects look slim after two consecutive bogeys on the final two holes of his round have left him looking very vulnerable at +3, with current leaders Francesco Molinari and Jason Day sharing the clubhouse lead at -7.

"I didn't see it, but I heard it. Zach's eyes were as big as I've ever seen them".
