May eyes compromise with Labour Party as Brexit nears

Theresa May aims to revive flagging Brexit talks with Labour's Jeremy Corbyn

"Importantly, a long extension would provide more certainty and predictability by removing the threat of constantly shifting cliff-edge dates", Tusk wrote.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Monday he was still waiting for signs of compromise from May and talks have been suspended until the summit in Brussels.

"There aren't any scheduled talks yet but I have no doubt things will develop today", he added.

No-deal: Parliament has voted against a no-deal and a law has been passed to try to prevent it - yet, unless the European Union agrees to a delay or Article 50 is revoked a no-deal will happen on Friday.

On the eve of an European Union summit of national leaders due to decide whether to grant Britain another Brexit delay, Barnier stressed that the length of any second postponement beyond the current date of April 12 would depend on the rationale presented by Prime Minister Theresa May.

According to draft conclusions of the European Union leaders' summit, the bloc will agree on another Brexit delay, however, the exact date for the maximum delay will be still discussed on Wednesday. European Council president Donald Tusk has recommended a one-year extension to the Brexit process, with a break clause allowing an earlier departure if a withdrawal deal is ratified in Westminster.

"Both houses of parliament have tonight strongly made clear their view that a no deal would be deeply damaging to jobs, manufacturing and security of our country", Labour MP Yvette Cooper, who helped propose the legislation, said.

Conservative MP Mark Francois on Monday called for a vote on May's leadership, despite party rules dictating that a confidence vote can not be held until December - a year after a previous attempt to remove her failed.

This will then be voted on by MPs.
