A day after a historic election, Chicago Mayor-elect Lori Lightfoot laid out what she sees as some of the city's most pernicious problems: entrenched segregation, gun violence and economic inequality.

The landslide win, which saw Lightfoot sweep all 50 voting districts, makes Chicago the biggest USA city to ever elect a black woman as Mayor. The 56-year-old attorney and former federal prosecutor has been interim first deputy of the city's procurement department, chief of staff and general counsel for the emergency management office and chief administrator of the office of professional standards.

The move drew criticism because presidents usually release their tax returns either during the election or after taking office. But I've been under audit for many years because the numbers are big, and I guess when you have a name you're audited.

In a bench trial, a judge acquitted the three Chicago police officers accused of covering up Jason Van Dyke's shooting of Laquan McDonald. "They're watching us. And they're seeing the beginning of something, well, a little bit different", she said. "We've got to have transparency and healing so that people are able to move on".

Lori Lightfoot scored a number of firsts as she also became the first ever female gay major in Chicago city after beating 13 other candidates in the political battle for the powerful office.

Lightfoot replaces Rahm Emanuel, a nationally prominent Democrat who withdrew from running for a third mayoral term.

She also has been removed from her supervisory role at work, but her lawyer said she has gone back to her job without incident. The new round of subpoenas signals increased pressure from Democrats on the Republican Trump White House.

Lightfoot added, "Breaking the back of the Chicago machine, it's quite monumental".
