House Democrats ask IRS for Trump's tax returns

Democrats have asked the Internal Revenue Service for 6 years of tax filings from President Donald Trump, and he had a very understated reaction to the news Wednesday.

Before a meeting with military leaders at the White House yesterday, President Trump responded.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., this week reminded President Donald Trump that Congress "didn't ask" for his tax returns, but demanded them.

U.S. Treasury officials were not immediately available for comment.

It was the third time this week that a Democratic-led House committee exerted oversight pressure on Trump.

"Weaponizing our nation's tax code by targeting political foes sets a risky precedent and weakens Americans' privacy rights", Mr. Brady told Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in a letter.

Children of Jamal Khashoggi receive 'blood money' from Saudi government
Three of Khashoggi's children live in the USA and are expected to sell their properties, which are in Jeddah. US President Donald Trump has remained neutral on the issue, saying, "Maybe he did, maybe he didn't".

Neal repeatedly said his committee was continuing to work with congressional counsel to research the best way to seek the tax returns.

As Democrats tied the bows on their most aggressive week of oversight since taking back the House majority in January for the first time in almost a decade, their Republican counterparts accused them of impeding the president's agenda and ability to work with House Democrats on policy solutions.

Under the code, it says "the secretary shall furnish such committee with any return or return information specified in such request".

House Democrats have unsuccessfully tried to pass a measure requiring presidential and vice presidential candidates to release ten years of personal tax returns as part of a larger government reform package, which has stalled in the Senate. "It is necessary for the Committee to determine the scope of any such examination and whether it includes a review of underlying business activities required to be reported on the individual income tax return".

Congressional Democrats have launched a number of investigations into Trump's financial dealings and into allegations of abuse of power and public corruption. The move drew criticism because presidents usually release their tax returns either during the election or after taking office. In a statement accompanying his letter, Neal said the request was about "policy, not politics", and "in no way based on emotion of the moment or partisanship". "We don't know, for example, whether or not the president's returns are actually under audit", Kildee began. Grassley added that he does not think he will be making a similar request for Trump's returns - although Grassley has said previously that if House Democrats get Trump's tax returns, he will want his committee to have them, too.
