This week's fact-checking video by CNN's Jake Tapper concerns several claims by President Donald Trump to justify his national emergency declaration for a border wall.

This is the first veto of Mr Trump's presidency.

A dozen defecting Republicans joined Senate Democrats in approving the joint resolution on Thursday, which capped a week of confrontation with the White House as both parties in Congress strained to exert their power in new ways. The emergency declaration came after Trump failed to win an appropriation for a border wall in a continuing resolution to fund the government last fall.

"Yesterday, Congress passed a risky resolution that if signed into law, would put countless Americans in danger".

"Congress has the freedom to pass this resolution", Trump said, "and I have the duty to veto it". But for those who broke from party ranks to vote for the termination resolution, the president said they were "doing what they have to do", adding that he did not pressure them for their vote.

U.S. Attorney General William Barr said the president's emergency declaration was legal.

"The House and the Senate resoundingly rejected the President's lawless power grab, yet the President has chosen to continue to defy the Constitution, the Congress and the will of the American people", Pelosi said in a statement announcing the override.

He said the vote against the president was also a vote "against the America people and their safety and security". And Trump made clear how he plans to respond, tweeting the word "VETO!" in all-caps moments after Thursday's vote. The president has been strong on that.

The large numbers have put a strain on immigration enforcement, although critics say a wall would do little to discourage the crossings since many of those apprehended at the border turn themselves in voluntarily.

Trump offered praise to the GOP senators who remained loyal and voted against terminating his declaration, saying "they were very courageous yesterday, and I appreciate that very much". "Watch, when you get back to your State, they will LOVE you more than ever before!"
