As many as 30 people have been injured after a flight travelling from the Turkish city of Istanbul to NY hit severe turbulence over the state of Maine.

Passengers who were on the flight described a range of injuries, including bloody noses and possible broken bones.

Coleman said the passengers and some crew members were first treated inside an airport terminal.

Turkish Airlines officials issued a statement confirming the flight "encountered an unusual turbulence about 40 minutes before landing" in NY.

There were more than 300 people on board the plane.

Spokesman Steve Coleman of the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said 28 people were taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Centre after the plane touched down at 5.35pm local time (10.35pm GMT) on Saturday.

Another passenger Sead Nikaj, told the network "nobody announced it or anything like that so we figured out something was wrong".

A New York Fire Department spokesman said they dealt with "32 passengers with non-life threatening injuries at JFK".
