Erdogan breaks silence on US to stand by Russian missile deal

On March 6, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told local television channels that not only will Turkey not back down from its S-400 plans, but it might seek the more advanced S-500 in the future.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member Turkey intends to proceed with the purchase of the S-400 missile despite USA warnings and the sale of the American-made system, claiming it will grant the United States personnel access to the Kremlin weapon.

Despite many attempts to purchase the Patriot air defense system from the U.S., Turkey has not been able to achieve this due to conflicts such as the "transfer of technology" issue.

The issue has aggravated already souring relations with Ankara, including tensions over Syria.

But Turkish officials have repeatedly said even if Turkey bought the U.S. Patriots, it would not cancel the S-400 deal, which it committed to.

Erdogan also noted Washington's decision to withdraw trade privileges from Turkey, warning that "no one should try to make us toe the line with such measures". "They must not give these weapons to the terrorists", Erdogan said, referring to Kurdish allies of the U.S., as quoted by Hurriyet Daily.

Summers said those consequences would encompass losing USA military sales to Turkey, including the long-awaited sale of the United States' new F-35 Joint Strike Fighter jet.

"The S-400 is a done deal, there can be no turning back. In total, F-35 industrial opportunities for Turkish companies are expected to reach $12 billion", according to information posted by Lockheed Martin, the jet's manufacturer. He said Turkey's use of the Russian surface-to-air missile defense system would be a threat to the F-35.

"I would just underscore the fact that this is a... huge decision for Turkey", he said regarding the F-35, adding: "But also to FMS (foreign military sales) and other systems we sell to Turkey as well".
