Brie Larson reveals why she was ‘so SCARED’ about playing Captain Marvel

Brie Larson stars as the title superhero in “Captain Marvel.”

'Captain Marvel' is an aimless superhero slog

So it is with mixed emotions that I approach Captain Marvel. However, none of them really captured the imagination of comics readers until Carol Danvers adopted the mantle - but that didn't happen overnight.

Great, and that's where she got her powers, right? It's 1995, and her memory is tickling with hints that she has been here before. All the while, her commander, Yon-Rogg (Jude Law) speeds across the galaxy to try to make it to Earth in time for the climax. In that way, he's nearly more insidious a villain than any of Carol's overt enemies. The pair are a joy to watch play off each other. "It's everything that she represents in terms of who she was before she became Captain Marvel". Thanks to Marvel Studios' decade-plus of reticence, Captain Marvel's slogan of "Higher, Farther, Faster" is more than aspirational.

At the risk of adding yet another middle-aged white male voice to the critical choir, I find myself in broad agreement with the opinions cited above.

What you'll find is considerable amount of humour, a depiction of actual female friendship and mentorship (the emotional heart of the movie), Ben Mendelsohn's entertaining yet layered Skrull commander, serious 90s nostalgia value (with an incredible period soundtrack to boot) and a delightful bond between Samuel L. Jackson's de-aged Nick Fury and Goose the cat. The visual effects teams marshal their legions to create passable spectacle when required. After 11 years of playing Fury (don't call him Nick or Nicholas), it's Captain Marvel that pulls the pieces together and fills in huge blanks in Fury's story.

‘Captain Marvel’ review: Marvelously fun film introduces a tough, smart superhero

So yeah, it's a pretty cool move for Larson in the middle of the hype for Captain Marvel, which is already looking at $350 million+ at the box office. It is easily one of the best comic book standalone films and most intriguing origin stories. Too many scenes that should be thrilling (a "French Connection"-lite car-and-elevated-train chase, and a "Star Wars"-style canyon dogfight), frightening (Carol undergoing enhanced interrogation aboard an enemy spacecraft) or awe-inspiring (when her full powers kick in) are energetic but generic".

"It didn't have as numerous usual fight scenes..."

She also has one of the most confusing and labyrinthine back stories this film fan has ever had the task of untangling. She can also handle the humor and is particularly adept at nailing smirks, side-eyes, and witty comebacks.

That said, the Phase One nostalgia does seem a bit jarring at times.

The committee expects some people to produce right away, and others may eventually face subpoenas, the official said. The panel is sending document requests to 81 people linked to the president and his associates.

Like the Doctor Strange and The Avengers mid-credits scenes, Ant-Man's post-credits scene is just the reuse of some footage from another film - in this case Civil War - and is intended as a sort of Ant-Man Will Return reminder for that movie. We showed the script to Sam the first time we met, and he said, 'It feels like you have written our relationship in this script, the pre-existing relationship I have with Brie'.

'I'm most excited for this movie to come out so now I can finally go to sleep knowing I didn't spoil it, ' she admitted.

Larson's primary co-star is Samuel Jackson.

According to current tracking estimates, the Brie Larson-headlined superhero adventure is on course to open with $150 million in North America over the Friday-to-Sunday period, with a further $200 million from worldwide markets for a global opening weekend in the range of $350 million. Annette Bening does double duty as research scientist Dr. Wendy Lawson and the avatar that embodies Carol's most admired person whenever she's jacked into the Kree's Supreme Intelligence matrix. They also have a solid supporting cast - including Gemma Chan and Djimon Hounsou among the Starforce crew, Ben Mendelsohn ("Rogue One") as the lead Skrull, and Lashana Lynch as an Air Force pilot with a major tie to Carol - and an ear for smart '90s soundtrack picks. Maria reminds Carol that even before she had super powers, she was a fierce warrior.

Like many movies in the MCU, the first act of Captain Marvel is its strongest, with directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck making a great case to helm the next iteration of the Star Trek franchise.

Boden told The New Paper at a roundtable interview last month: "They won't tell us anything about Avengers".
