Spotify finally rolls out to India

Coming to Spotify Premium subscription plans, users will get a 30-day trial for the Premium subscription. The app is available for download for free, and premium services start as a subscription rate of as low as Rs 19.

With this model outlined by MBW, where three months of PAYG access costs 389 INR (US$5.47), Spotify is essentially offering six months of Premium access for around the same as one month (US$9.99) in the US. Another feature is "Free with total control" that has been introduced for the first time, allowing smartphone users to play every song on demand on Spotify Free.

The service in India will come with more than four crore songs and 300 crore playlists offering Indian and worldwide music, across moods and moments.

The streaming platform went live in the world's second most populous country of over 1.3bn people yesterday (February 26) at around 9.30pm NY time and around 8am in India today (February 27). Not only will Spotify bring Indian artists to the world, we will also bring the world's music to fans across India.

I think definitely I served much, much better in Melbourne than here. "It's the first thing we will do in the morning". Especially I realize after two rounds, we were already saying, 'Wow, this is a great tournament.' Now it's only bonus.

Spotify also has plans to move beyond music into the growing podcast market. Additionally, the company recently faced an issue with Warner Music, which disallows the company from bringing music by artists like Katy Perry, Led Zepelling etc.to the country.

"Not only will Spotify bring Indian artists to the world, we'll also bring the world's music to fans across India". It can be used to play music in the vehicle, on TV, voice and Wi-Fi speaker along with integrations with Google Maps, Tinder and Instagram, among others. Spotify is offering 50% discount on its monthly subscription for students which comes to Rs 59 per month.

This news might not please everyone of course - the company's launch arrives after the Bombay High Court in Mumbai denied an emergency injunction request by Warner Music Group which could have prevented it from launching there.

"WMG instructed Warner/Chappell Music (WCM) to file for an injunction in an attempt to leverage WCM's local Indian publishing rights, to extract concessions in WMG's global renewal negotiations for musical recordings".

Spotify, which has been readying its India launch with partnerships already in place with large record labels such as T-Series and Sony, has been unable to firm up its licensing agreement with Warner Music.

As of the end of 2018, Spotify reported 207 million total users, including 96 million Spotify Premium subscribers, across 79 markets. Spotify also doesn't offer top-up plans in the US.

It will be in for a huge competition in India where players like Saavn and Gaana already have a strong base.
