Trump Claims Japanese Prime Minister Nominated Him For A Nobel Peace Prize

President Donald Trump speaks during an event in the Rose Garden at the White House to declare a national emergency in order to build a wall along the southern border, Friday, Feb. 15, 2019, in Washington.

The president said early exchanges with Mr Kim were filled with "fire and fury" but since their first meeting a year ago, the two have established a good relationship. He said "I have nominated you, respectfully, on behalf of Japan".

The commander-in-chief then said that the reason behind Abe's decision to send "the most handsome five-page letter" to the Nobel committee was that the prime minister "had rocket ships and he had missiles flying over Japan, and they had alarms going off - you know that".

In 2009, President Barack Obama received the Nobel Peace Prize for laying out the US commitment to "seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons".

Lest this should suggest a lack of enthusiasm for a prize for Mr Trump, he hastened to say in answer to a further question: "I'm not saying it's not true". "He didn't even know" what he got nominated for. "He was there for about 15 seconds, and he got the Nobel Prize".

Trump said he does not expect to win the prize but thanked the Japanese prime minister anyway.

Trump alluded to 2017, when North Korea lobbed two longer-range missiles over Hokkaido, stoking concern in the country and with Abe, who characterized the launches as "unprecedented".

Nor could a report Sunday by the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, citing unidentified government sources, that Abe had nominated Trump at the US president's request.

President Donald Trump said that when he assumed office, he met with Barack Obama in the Oval Office, where the outgoing president revealed that the "biggest problem" was North Korea.

A wide range of people can nominate for the Nobel Peace Prize, including members of parliaments and governments, heads of state, university professors of history, social sciences or law and past Nobel Peace Prize laureates, among others.

His message was backed by former CIA Director John Brennan, who told NBC News that Obama was never on the brink of starting any war with North Korea, "large or small".

When Trump spoke about the breakthrough with North Korea during a rally in MI a year ago on April 28, the crowd began chanting, "Nobel, Nobel, Nobel".

"I highly praise President Trump's leadership". "I have a very good relationship with Kim Jong-un".
