Motz blasts PM and his office for handling of SNC-Lavalin ordeal

Prince Albert's MP is accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of trying to cover-up the SNC-Lavalin Affair.

OTTAWA-Jody Wilson-Raybould would still be justice minister if it wasn't for the resignation of former Treasury Board president Scott Brison, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on February 15, downplaying suggestions she was moved for not giving into political arm-twisting.

Glen Motz, MP for Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner, raised concerns on Friday about the SNC-Lavalin situation and the extent of involvement by the Prime Minister and/or his office, according to a press release.

The SNC-Lavalin case is before a court in Montreal, charged with fraud and corruption in connection with payments of almost $48 million to public officials in Libya under Moammar Gadhafi's government and allegations it defrauded Libyan organizations of an estimated $130 million.

Last week, the Globe and Mail reported that Wilson-Raybould felt pressured to instruct the director of public prosecutions to negotiate a remediation agreement with Quebec engineering giant SNC-Lavalin rather than pursue a criminal trial on charges of bribery and fraud linked to the company's efforts to secure business in Libya.

At the news conference, Trudeau continued to pass the issue to Wilson-Raybould.

"I do want to hear from her, I do".

While there will a process to get answers for her departure through the House of Commons justice committee and ethics commissioner, Bellegarde says the Liberals must push critical pieces of legislation, including a recently tabled bill on Indigenous languages and a proposed bill on child welfare. Trudeau said he would have never have moved her if his Treasury Board president hadn't resigned, forcing the change. "I had full confidence in her role as attorney general to make the decision", he said.

Trudeau has been asked to waive the solicitor client privilege for this case.
