According to USA Today, because of the time of year in the United States, the event is called the snow moon, a Native American nickname to the monthly events, like harvest moon for September and strawberry moon in June and sturgeon moon in August, giving it the full name Super Snow Moon.

A full moon being hailed as a "super snow moon" is sure to get spectators howling when it hovers in the sky on Tuesday night - because it will feature the biggest and brightest moon of the year. It will also be a "super moon", which means the moon will be at its closest point in its orbit around the Earth.

A supermoon phenomenon occurs when a full moon, on its oval-shaped orbit, is at its closest to us, known as perigee, which is about 356,000 kilometres as measured from the centre of the Earth to the centre of the moon. It is expected to be the brightest moon of its kind until 2026. This is the second supermoon of 2019, after the Super Blood Wolf Moon Eclipse that occurred on January 20.
