Missouri administrators tore into the NCAA's decision, with chancellor Alexander N. Cartwright calling the decision "harsh and inconsistent" and athletic director Jim Sterk saying the school will "immediately appeal".
The appeal could take months. The NCAA ruled that former Missouri tutor Yolanda Kumar violated NCAA ethical conduct, academic misconduct and academic extra benefits rules by completing academic work for 12 student-athletes.
Overall, she admitted to improperly helping 12 Missouri student athletes. In one instance, she allegedly completed an entire course for a football player, whose name was not revealed.
The investigation did not find she was directed by colleagues to do it.

"Among other differences, UNC stood by the courses and the grades it awarded student-athletes", the NCAA said in its decision.
"Simply put, 12 student-athletes did not complete their own work", the committee said.
For most of the MU athletes involved, Kumar completed online coursework, including assignments, quizzes and exams. Roberts said Kumar along with the school and NCAA all agreed that infractions took place, and at that point it comes down to applying prescribed penalties. That means those unable to participate in the postseason could transfer elsewhere without having to redshirt.
