Deal Reached to Temporarily Reopen US Government

Donald Trump has struck a short-term deal to reopen the federal government for three weeks, ending the longest-running shutdown in U.S. history.

President Donald Trump agreed under mounting pressure on Friday to end a 35-day-old partial USA government shutdown without getting the $5.7 billion he had demanded from Congress for a border wall, handing a political victory to Democrats.

U.S. lawmakers and the White House were under intense pressure to resolve the impasse, as hundreds of thousands of federal workers headed into a second month without paychecks, and the political stalemate began to disrupt some of the nation´s busiest airports.

In her Friday press conference, Pelosi spent a majority of her time talking about the furloughed federal workers and promised, as the president did, to get their pay back quickly.

U.S. President Donald Trump said that he has reached a deal with Congressional leaders to reopen the government for three weeks. Air traffic controllers were working without pay and in New Jersey's busy Newark Liberty International Airport staffing issues led to delays, raising the specter of a wider degradation of United States air travel.

The shutdown ended as US Democratic leaders had insisted it must - reopen the government first, then talk border security.

The standoff became so severe that, as the Senate opened with prayer, Chaplain Barry Black called on high powers in the "hour of national turmoil" to help senators do "what is right". A Washington Post-ABC News poll released Friday found that public disapproval of Trump had increased to 58 percent as most Americans held him and congressional Republicans responsible for the shutdown. Bipartisan talks provided a glimmer of hope Friday, that some agreement could be reached.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke on the Senate floor shortly after Trump's announcement, congratulating lawmakers on the development.

The announcement comes on the 35th day of the shutdown, when roughly 800,000 federal employees will miss their second consecutive paycheck.

Instead of emerging victorious, many of Trump's allies are walking away from a record-breaking government shutdown feeling outplayed, not least by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Declaring an emergency could allow Trump to circumvent Congress and repurpose funds Congress has appropriated for other purposes in order to build a wall.

After Democrats and Republicans failed to reach an agreement on the wall in December, nearly 800,000 federal workers were either furloughed or are worked without pay. The White House and Democrats will continue to negotiate over the border security issue in the next three weeks. It earned 50 votes to 47 against, but it needed 60 to advance.

Minutes later, senators voted 52-44 for a Democratic alternative that sought to open padlocked agencies through February 8 with no wall money.

A growing number of lawmakers of both parties have said compromise is the only way to end the political stalemate and reopen the government.
