Browns hire Freddie Kitchens: Instant analysis of Cleveland's new head coach

Browns huddle in search for coach Kitchens seen as favorite

Report: Kitchens, Stefanski finalists for Browns job

We're down to three head-coaching vacancies in the NFL. The interim head coach, Gregg Williams, meanwhile, lost out on both the top job and his defensive coordinator job, being fired Wednesday, according to ESPN.

According to Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot, Freddie Kitchens has a "good chance" of being named the Browns' next head coach. With Kitchens serving as the interim offensive coordinator after Todd Haley was sacked, the Browns went 5-3 under the duo, and Baker Mayfield rapidly became one of the most productive quarterbacks in the league.

The Cleveland Browns have apparently found their next head coach.

Tom Brady Messages Philip Rivers After Chargers Win, Quarterback Ready For Patriots
The Patriots piled up 414 yards, but the offense sputtered in the red zone, scoring just once in four trips inside the 20. We had little idea that the trenches would help Dallas win just its third playoff game of the millennium.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports the team will promote offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens to the role.

Under Kitchens, who took over after the firing of former coordinator Todd Haley, Cleveland was reinvigorated. With it being down to Kitchens and Stefanski, you'd have to wonder if the other is under consideration for offensive coordinator - and if so, is that a better job than the Vikings for Stefanski? Cleveland will select 17th in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Most importantly, Kitchens helped to further Baker Mayfield's development.

Williams took over a Browns team that was 2-5-1 to start the year and put them in playoff contention by December.

The most interesting name is Ryan Lindley, who not only is connected to Kitchens through this Browns job, but he was also a quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals from 2012-2014 while Kitchens was on staff. Given his inexperience, a rise from graduate assistant to National Football League offensive coordinator in the span of two years is an awfully risky chance to take.

Williams went 5-3 as the interim head coach following Hue Jackson's dismissal.
