Saudi women will now be notified by text messages when they are divorced as per a new regulation implemented by the kingdom's ministry of justice.

In a statement to the network, the Saudi Ministry of Justice tried to portray the decision as "a step aimed at protecting the rights of female clients, and enhancing digital transformation with more services".

Local female lawyers suggest the measure will end what are known as secret divorces - cases where men end a marriage without telling their wives.

Lawyer Nasreen al-Ghamdi said Saudi courts regularly receive complaints about impersonating the identity of divorced women.

In a statement to StepFeed, Saudi women's rights activist Nouf said that even though the recently passed ruling isn't flawless, it's still a step in the right direction.

Only recently was a royal decree reversed whereby divorced women would automatically lose custody of their children to their husbands.

Last year, a decades-old driving ban on women was lifted in Saudi Arabia.
