According to WGN a weapon was recovered and a person of interest was being questioned.

Two other Chicago officers besides Marmolejo and Gary were killed in the line of duty this year.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the city had lost "two young men, both fathers with young families".

A long, somber procession started before daybreak Tuesday morning, as hundreds of police vehicles escorted the bodies of two Chicago police officers killed Monday night by a speeding train as they pursued an armed suspect.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson Johnson said the train was traveling 60 or 70 miles an hour and both officers were killed immediately. It's not clear whether the officers followed the suspect up the side of the railroad embankment, or went up stairs at a nearby station.

At 6:33 p.m., a South Shore Line alert confirmed the train was halted on Metra property.

Officers responding to the fatal accident were able to locate a weapon at the scene and also found shell casings near the scene of the original shots fired call, officials said.

Chicago Police planned a press conference for later Monday evening. While they were investigating, they were struck by the train, officials said.

"It just highlights again how risky this job can be".

The Fraternal Order of Police tweeted "Prayers, please", shortly after the incident.

Police said there was no rail stop at the location where the officers were struck. Paul Bauer was fatally shot while chasing a suspect downtown.
