US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned of regional escalation after Iran conducted a missile test

Iran maintains that no UNSC resolution bans the country's defensive missile program or its missile tests.

On Sunday, a senior Iranian official said the country's missile program was not in breach of United Nations resolutions.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo questioned whether many pillars of global trade and diplomacy are still relevant as he singled out China, Iran and Russian Federation on Tuesday for violating treaties and multistate agreements.

"As we have been warning for some time, Iran's missile testing and missile proliferation is growing", Pompeo said in the statement. "Three days later, they test launched another medium range ballistic missile".

Pompeo said the test violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, however, which endorsed the 2015 nuclear deal signed by several world powers and Iran. We are accumulating risk of escalation in the region if we fail to restore deterrence. The UN resolution cited by Pompeo is the nuclear deal the Trump administration withdrew from earlier this year, Parsi added.

France said it was concerned by the test, with the foreign ministry describing it as "provocative and destabilizing" and saying it "does not conform" with United Nations resolution 2231 on the Iran deal.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi also said Iranian missiles were purely defensive and added, "There is no Security Council resolution prohibiting missile program and missile tests by Iran".

U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook, the White House's point man on curbing Iranian aggression across the globe, said Thursday that Washington stands prepared to use forces to curtail such weapons development activities.

This likely indicates that they feel his cooperation is very valuable to investigators. On Tuesday, Cohen pleaded guilty to one count of making a false statement to the U.S.

UN Security Council resolution 2231 enshrined Iran's 2015 nuclear deal with Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia and the United States, in which Tehran curbed its disputed uranium-enrichment program in exchange for an end to worldwide sanctions.

In May, U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew the United States from JCPOA, asserting that the agreement is flawed and failed to address the threats posed by the Shiite regime.

"We would like to see the European Union move sanctions that target Iran's missile programme", Hook told reporters aboard Pompeo's plane as he travelled to Brussels for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting.

"While [the United States] itself violates [UN Security Council resolution] 2231 - and even threatens to punish those who don't wish to violate it in abiding with illegal USA sanctions - it now falsely accuses Iran of violating the very SAME resolution", Mr. Zarif added. "It shows that our best efforts to try to talk them out of their aggressive support of terrorism is probably going to be as unsuccessful as the UN's effort to stop them from launching missiles", Mattis said. The European parties to the nuclear deal have refused to pull out and said they would seek ways to continue trade with Iran. It has withdrawn from the Paris climate accord, the Iran nuclear deal, the U.N.'s top human rights and educational agencies and the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal with Pacific Rim nations. He added that while the strategic threat from Iran was less significant globally than the one from North Korea, he said it was regionally significant.
