G20 delegates said that negotiations on the final summit statement proceeded more smoothly than at a meeting of Asian leaders two weeks ago that ended without a consensus, thanks to a decision at the G20 summit to avoid any reference to protectionism and unfair trading practices.

At this years summit, the group will discuss reforms that need to be made to world trade and issues such as climate change, the alleged murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi by Saudi agents, and Russia's actions in Ukraine.

The US and China have been locked in a dispute over their trade imbalance and Beijing's push to challenge US technological dominance.

Xi said the development of China-Russia relations enjoys strong internal dynamism and a bright prospect as it goes with the trend of the times and the aspirations of both peoples.

Trump, who has already slapped $250 billion in tariffs on China and threatened more to come next month, sounded upbeat about making progress with Xi.

Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the USA are all represented.

The other key attendees on the American side, according to the White House, will be Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Treasury Secretary Steven Munchin, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, national security adviser John Bolton, Trump son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner, and Larry Kudlow, assistant to the president for economic policy.

"I think this is an issue that Trump cares a lot about and is going to use when he campaigns for 2020", Ms O'Neil said.

Uncertainty prevailed about how Trump, known for his unpredictability, would behave at what was shaping up as one of the group's most consequential summits.

After the photo was taken, the crown prince did manage a hearty exchange with Mr Putin. The deal still needs to win congressional approval in Washington.
