President Donald Trump struck back at a black female reporter's question about his calling himself "nationalist" as "emboldening white nationalists", calling it a "racist question", "insulting", and "very awful".

"We need the money to build the wall, the whole wall, not pieces of it", Trump told reporters at a news conference at the White House following Tuesday's midterm election.

Trump called on Acosta, who began questioning the president over his use of the word "invasion" to describe the Central American migrant caravan traveling towards the U.S.

When Acosta asked if Trump was "demonizing" immigrants with his rhetoric and controversial campaign ads, Trump suggested, "I think you should let me run the country". To Jim Acosta: 'CNN should be ashamed of themselves having you working for them.

Acosta tried to interrupt, saying Trump was being unfair.

The president told him his time was done, telling him to sit down and to stop being a "rude, bad person".

After this exchange, many in the media rushed to Acosta's defense.

"That's such a racist question", responded the president, who noted his high approval rating among black Americans. "You and I have a difference of opinion", Trump replied calmly.
