No sign of assault in Saudi sisters' NYC deaths

Tala and Rotana moved to the US from Saudi Arabia with their mother in 2015 and settled in Fairfax.

The sisters had been reported missing before, according to Fairfax police.

The sister had a history of running away from their family's home in Virginia where they had not lived since the end of 2017.

But they were wearing westernized clothes, including black leggings and fur coats - a no-no in the arch-conservative desert kingdom.

Despite initial reports that the sisters were bound together, Shea said he would describe the tape as "not binding them together, but keeping them together".

Some kind of suicide is still a leading theory in the sisters' deaths, however.

Shea said information showed they stayed at a number of high-end hotels with video showing them in apparent good health as recently as a week before their bodies were discovered.

"Is it possible? I can tell you that there were no, say, marks on the body, indicative of a fall from a height".

Electronic court records indicated the sisters took Uber taxis to NY and arrived on September 1, Shea said.

Once they were identified, police sent detectives to Virginia to piece together the last months of their lives. "They just came and went".

It wasn't the first time the sisters vanished.

Police are still appealing for anyone who had met the sisters since August to come forward with further information.

Unidentified family members in Saudi Arabia had previously told the Arab News that they believed the sisters could not have committed suicide.

A Saudi official refuted that to HuffPost, stating that the phone call was about the mother's expired immigration status. "We treat everything like a crime until we know otherwise", he said.

The Saudi embassy in Washington said yesterday that it was extending its "support and aid in this trying time" to the family.
