University of Utah Shooting: U of U Suspect Fled on Foot

Lauren McCluskey was found shot in a auto Monday night near on-campus student housing.

McCluskey's family released a statement via Buzzfeed News, which gave more details about Lauren's relationship to her suspected killer, and what may have led to her death.

"Last night a little before 9 pm, she was returning to her university apartment from her night class and talking to me on the phone", Jill McCluskey stated. "Suddenly, I heard her yell, 'No, no, no!' I thought she might have been in a vehicle accident", Lauren's mom, an economics professor at Washington State University, revealed. According to her, Jill heard her daughter scream, "No, no, no!" in the middle of their conversation, and did not hear from her afterwards.

Jill McCluskey's husband, Matt, immediately called 911. She'd recently complained to campus police that Rowland had been harassing her. McCluskey was apparently on the phone with her mother when she was abducted, and dropped her phone and the rest of her possessions on the ground. Rowland killed himself overnight at a church after police tracked him down, authorities said.

Asked if law enforcement had done enough to protect her, university police chief Dale Brophy said, "I want the answer to that question as well.The detective had been in contact with Ms. McCluskey, and they were working to build a case".

Rowland pleaded guilty to enticing a minor over the internet and attempted forcible sex abuse in an agreement with prosecutors, records show.

The statement said Lauren dated her alleged killer for about a month.

Lauren was a 2015 honors graduate of Pullman High School. After clearing the building, they found our suspect deceased in a room in the church, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ' Lt. Brian Wahlin said to ABC.

"She loved to sing and had strength and determination". University officials ordered students to stay in place for about three hours as they searched for the gunman.

According to Watkins, university police received a report of a possible abduction in a parking lot outside a residence hall at around 8:20 p.m. local time on Monday night, with students reporting that they heard an argument and then gunshots.

Lauren was a communications major and was to have graduated in May 2019. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and all of those dear to her".
