Two Pilots Die Following Su-27 Fighter Jet Crash in Ukraine- General Staff

A fighter jet in the Ukrainian Air Force has crashed in the Ukraine, killing the Ukrainian pilot and also a U.S. service member - possibly from the U.S. Air National Guard's 144th Fighter Wing based in Fresno.

The General Staff of Ukraine's armed forces said the two-seat Su-27UB went down in the Kmelnitskyi region. "We will provide more information as soon as it becomes available", the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa said in a statement. "It is now under investigation and we will continue to provide more information as it becomes available", it added.

The crash took place during joint military training between the USA military and Ukrainian counterparts, known as Clear Sky 2018.

Earlier, it was reported that the Ukrainian Su-27 and the US F-15 fighter jets conducted a training mission within Clear Sky 2018 military drills.

The Su-27UB jet was taking part in Clear Sky 2018, a joint military exercise with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members taking place October 8 through 19 in Western Ukraine.

Details of the plane crash, including the cause, are not clear.

U.S. Air Force pilots are now in Ukraine participating in a large-scale multi-national aviation exercise known as "Clear Sky" involving close to 1,000 personnel from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries.

Personnel from nine nations are taking part in the Clear Sky 2018 exercises that started in Ukraine on October 8 and is expected to run until October 19.

"Training will focus on air sovereignty, air interdiction, air-to-ground integration, air mobility operations, aeromedical evacuation, cyber defense, and personnel recovery", it added.
