Wayde Sims, a forward for the LSU men's basketball team, was shot and killed early Friday morning near the Southern University campus in Baton Rouge, police there told the Advocate.

Junior Wayde Sims was reportedly shot at a Subway restaurant across from Southern University's football stadium around 1:25 a.m. ET Friday.

Police did not identify Sims in the video, which also shows cars stopping to avoid the melee, but Coppola said police are primarily interested in identifying a man seen wearing red trousers with a white stripe.

LSU basketball coach Will Wade issued a statement saying the team is "devastated". He averaged 5.6 points and 2.9 rebounds in 17.4 minutes per game.

His father, Wayne Sims, also played for LSU in the late 1980s. We need your prayers for Wayde, for his family, for all of us.

Alleva added: "He was such a lovable young man who was full of joy". Coaches spent part of the morning comforting Sims' parents, Wade said, before breaking the news to his teammates at an early workout. That's the way it was between the two of them, a lifelong relationship without the need for biology, one built on strong roots dug deep in Baton Rouge and fanned by a mutual love for LSU.

SC also has ordered more evacuations as rivers continue to rise in the aftermath of a storm that has claimed at least 43 lives. This low, called Invest 98 for now, has been fighting a lot of wind shear, so development chances only sit at 30 percent.

"Maybe the guy I've been most impressed with is Wayde Sims", Wade said on 104.5 FM ESPN's "Off the Bench".

Our thoughts are with the Sims family and LSU community during this tragedy. He was a high school prodigy and was named the Louisiana Gatorade Player of the Year in 2015.
