Britain's Labour to vote on keeping second Brexit referendum on table

GETTY POWER Rebel Labour MPs will have a tougher time standing up to Corbyn

- With Brexit dominating the party conference season, expect a big push by pro-EU MPs and activists for Labour to back the People's Vote campaign for a second referendum - something Jeremy Corbyn has so far resisted.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has been reluctant to support growing demands for a second referendum or People's Vote, but the party agreed on a motion after five hours that went some way to appeasing members who want another chance to vote on Brexit.

His words appeared to be at odds with the motion the party chose to put to Labour conference delegates today [Tuesday].

More than 100 constituency parties have submitted motions calling for the issue to be put to a vote.

'What comes out of conference I will adhere to. We will vote down a blind Brexit."Let me be clear: this isn't about frustrating the process".

'My big worry is that if we go for a referendum which is seen as just a simple rerun we could divide the country again, we could get nearly the same result or if it's slightly different that people demand another referendum'.

"Obviously I'm bound by the democracy of our party". "So if conference makes a decision I will not walk away from it and I will act accordingly".

Asked if Labour could negotiate a deal in six months, Mr McDonnell said: "We think we can, we think we can negotiate a deal".

Party members expected to vote in favour of such a measure on Tuesday, throwing up ideological and practical concerns for veteran socialist Corbyn.

Corbyn will likely stick to his tried-and-tested method when he delivers his keynote speech on Wednesday, according to experts, prioritizing efforts to bring down the government rather than trying to stop Brexit.

The Sunday Times reported that two senior aides within May's Downing Street team had responded to her "summit humiliation" last week by suggesting that an early general election in November could help save both her leadership and her job.

The Labour Party says the motion is not "prescriptive" on what the question of any second referendum should be, leaving options open to gauge the lie of the land if, or when, such a vote needs to take place.

"It would be unthinkable for this to not include an option to stay in the European Union, and not what the 90 per cent of Labour members who back a public vote would expect".

Yet it did so only after overcoming fierce opposition from those in the party who believe it will limit criticism of Israel.

Labour - which wants the United Kingdom to remain in a customs union but not the single market - has not ruled out voting for any deal Mrs May brings back from Brussels, ahead of the UK's 29 March departure date.

But some Tory moderates had hoped that, faced with the prospect of no deal, some Labour MPs would vote with the Government.
