What's the deal? Jimmy Butler reportedly requests trade from Timberwolves

Training camp for all National Basketball Association teams gets underway next week, with the Heat set to open up next Tuesday, Sept. 25.

And while it's unlikely that the C's would make any sort of play for Butler while knowing they're not featured in his long-term plans - nor does Butler necessarily fit a need for the Celtics with the emergence of Jaylen Brown as a legitimate building block - Butler's interest in his next destination is certainly worth recognizing if you're the Celtics. But will the Minnesota Timberwolves let him?

According to the reports, Butler met with Minnesota team president and head coach Tom Thibodeau on Wednesday and told Thibodeau he doesn't want to start the season with the Wolves.

It seemed like an ominous sign for the Timberwolves that the meeting, which was originally scheduled for Monday in Minneapolis, was pushed back to Tuesday and moved. ESPN's Adiran Wojnarowski reported that Butler is "most determined to find a way" to the Clippers.

If this is it for Butler in Minnesota, the partnership would have produced only 59 games over one. Players signed this summer can't be traded until at least December 15 (and, in specific instances, January 15), which greatly reduces Minnesota's flexibility to make the best deal it can for one of the league's elite wing players. However, more competition as well as numerous teams will also have cap space.

Butler's unhappiness is just the latest issue to befall Minnesota over the past few months.

Butler had once imagined playing for the Los Angeles Lakers, but LeBron James' arrival as the franchise's cornerstone made it less appealing for Butler in the prime of his career, league sources said.

Other expiring deals the Nets could potentially offer to the Timberwolves, who are negotiating with All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns on a max extension, are DeMarre Carroll, Kenneth Faried and Jared Dudley, as well as Rondae Hollis-Jefferson, entering the final year of his rookie deal. While both NY and Brooklyn will also have the cap space to sign another star alongside Butler next offseason, it's particularly newsworthy that Los Angeles is apparently the front-runner for Leonard next summer.

Those questions won't stop until the season ends - or until the Timberwolves answer them with actions.
