Seattle Storm sweep Washington Mystics to capture WNBA championship

For a game featuring teams from Seattle and Washington D.C., Hartford-New Haven had the second highest viewership for markets watching the championship behind only Seattle-Tacoma, according to ESPN.

UConn alumna Breanna Stewart glanced over at her teammates with a smile, soaking in the moments after winning the Seattle Storm's third WNBA Title Wednesday night.

The answer came almost four months later with a championship. "We're one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the league". She did work inside, finishing post moves and getting to the basket for lay-ups; she did work in the mid-range, knocking down pull up jumpers as part of Seattle's offensive flow; and she knocked down her first four 3-pointers, finishing the day 4-of-5 from beyond the arc as she was able to stretch the Washington defense. Case in point: can you imagine planned construction on Capital One Arena during either the National Basketball Association or NHL postseason, forcing the Wizards or Caps to play elsewhere?

Seattle overcame an early deficit to lead 20-16 after the first quarter. Yet less than a minute later, the Storm had the lead back to 15 points, completely shutting the Mystics down. Since the league went to a best-of-five format in 2005, four teams trailed 0-2.

After eight years, the Seattle Storm are WNBA champions once again. I just wanted to bridge that gap as fast as I could, and they've been great. "We rely on that, and we didn't make them tonight". Howard capped her breakout season with 29 points (on 11 of 14 shooting) with a game-high 14 rebounds. Their combined 59 points alone accounted for more than 61 percent of the Storms' points.

Stewart had 30 points, and Howard, who had been a bit player in Minnesota last year when the Lynx won the title, was a monumental contributor all year in Seattle after her acquisition in a trade.

Elena Delle Donne scored 23 points for the Mystics. Howard and Clark filled in the gaps, as did Crystal Langhorne, Sami Whitcomb and rookie point guard Jordin Canada. Stewart, the MVP, and Loyd carried the scoring for much of the season, combining for almost 40 points per game.

The 24-year-old was also named the WNBA Finals MVP on Wednesday following her 30-point performance.

But the Storm have yet to win on the road in the playoffs, despite posting the best road record in the regular season.

"We understand that we have to take care of the ball", Bird said. The pair are joined by Liz Cambage of the Dallas Wings, Diana Taurasi of the Phoenix Mercury and Tiffany Hayes of the Atlanta Dream to round out the team.
