Florence expected to become hurricane, heading to southeast US

The storm's center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and is expected to approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.

Forecasters say Florence will pass between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday and start its approach to the US on Thursday morning.

Florence was a Category 3 hurricane as of 11 a.m. Monday, with sustained winds of 115 miles per hour. Forecasters said it now has maximum sustained winds of about 130 miles per hour and even stronger gusts.

While Florence is forecast to stay north of Florida, large swells will impact the east coast of our state resulting in life-threatening surf and rip currents.

Hurricane Florence picked up power and again became a major hurricane Monday, and forecasters say it's got the mid-Atlantic region of the East Coast in its sights.

In North Carolina, officials already had ordered some 250,000 residents and visitors to begin evacuating the Outer Banks barrier islands.

According the US-based National Hurricane Centre at 1pm, the storm had maximum sustained winds of 130mph.

Gov. Rick Scott released a statement on Monday urging Floridians to be prepared for the unexpected and remain on alert about Hurricane Florence.

There are no coastal watches or warnings in effect.

This morning the storm grew to Category 4 strength, and was predicted to intensify — but Florence was sticking to a course that would send it south of Bermuda over the next 24 hours.
