With a bogey on his penultimate hole, he had an 8-under 62 at Aronimink. McIlroy has a lot of works to do to get back on top.

His performances this season, which have included a brief lead in the final round of the Open Championship in July, have catapulted Woods up to 26th in the world rankings, a leap of more than 600 places since the end of a year ago as he recovered from spine fusion surgery.

Woods hit nothing longer than a 9-iron into the par 4s. "We've fallen back a little bit these last two weeks, but no reason we can't play well here".

"It was just one of those days", he said after taking a profligate 33 putts.

For Woods, it was another lost opportunity, even though he remains in the mix. Woods was understandably frustrated after opening the tournament with a 62 on Thursday and not being able to add to it.

He was at 13-under 127.

He didn't make many more, but he had chances. "But nothing good comes from thinking too far ahead". Only six players among the 69-player field shot over par.

Hideki Matsuyama shot a 6-under 64 to land three shots off the pace in a four-way tie for third.

McIlroy had four birdies over his first nine holes and had six birdies on his final nine holes. The crowd was much thinner for McIlroy, but those fans saw quite a show.

He missed a 4-foot par putt on the par-3 fifth hole and didn't convert any of the birdie putts from the 20-foot range. Give these pros a course this soft and they will go to town - and so they painted it red. "And I didn't capitalize".
