The Democratic Party continued to lurch left this week when Boston City Council member Ayanna Pressley defeated 10-term Representative Michael Capuano; stunning political insiders just weeks ahead of the 2018 midterm elections. In making his concession remarks, Capuano told his campaign team, "I will tell you Ayanna Pressley is going to be a good congresswoman and I will tell you that MA is going to be well served".

A part of the wave of women of color breaking into traditionally white positions of power across the country, Pressley's win echoed that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's over the longtime representative Joe Crowley in NY, and the ascent of Stacey Abrams in Georgia, who - if she wins - will become the first African American female governor in United States history. She also worked as a senior aide to former Rep.

Pressley is a commanding stage presence who frequently ditches microphones; she doesn't need them.

Capuano, 66, first won the seat in 1998 but struggled to keep up with Pressley as she argued that a young and majority-nonwhite district needed a fresh voice in Washington.

Baker, a moderate who has been popular with voters in what is perceived as one of the nation's bluest states, will face Democrat Jay Gonzalez, who served as secretary of administration and finance under Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick, in November. Pressley backed Kaepernick's decision to kneel during the National Anthem, while Capuano said the tactic "divided America".

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's lips sealed on White House subpoenas, pardons
He likened it to another controversial, landmark Supreme Court decision, the Miranda ruling about the rights of criminal suspects. Judge Kavanaugh had dissented when, in 2011, his court upheld new restrictions on assault weapons in the District of Columbia.

And it's in the biggest city - Boston - where Pressley, a city councilor there since 2010, trounced Capuano.

Hillary Clinton carried the district by 72 points in 2016.

Michael Capuano, who has represented the district for 20 years, conceded defeat in a primary that few predicted he would lose, armed with an impressive party machinery and top flight support.

Voters who've participated in the races since President Trump's election haven't been sending a message only to conservatives, but to Democrats, as well, when it comes to their desired demographics for the next body of Congress.

According to data from the Associated Press, Pressley won much of the Seventh Congressional District, which includes portions of Boston, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Milton, Randolph, and Somerville. Amatul-Wadud would have been among the first Muslim women in Congress.

Amazon Hits $1 Trillion Valuation
Indeed, it was less than a year ago in early October 2017 that Amazon shares first crossed the $1,000 mark. Amazon on Tuesday became the second USA public company after Apple to hit the $1 trillion valuation mark.

"With our rights under assault, with our freedoms under siege", Pressley said, "it isn't good enough to see Democrats back in power, but it matters who those Democrats are".

Neal is in line to chair the powerful House Ways and Means Committee if Democrats take over the House.

With 13 percent of precincts reporting, Keating led businessman Bill Cimbrelo 86 percent to 14 percent when the AP called the race.

The success of left-leaning minority Democratic candidates has not been limited to federal races.

Colton Underwood, Ashley Iaconetti and More of Bachelor Nation's Famous Virgins
The 26-year-old was then eliminated from the show, clearly heartbroken by not being able to continue things with Becca. Most recently, Underwood had been among the cast of " Bachelor in Paradise " until he departed the show last week.
