Trump's conspicuous absences at both McCain and Barbara Bush's funerals offer perhaps the starkest examples of the ways in which Trump finds himself ostracized from some of the duties other presidents performed as nearly de facto aspects of their job. McCain had been an infuriating foil in a long-running feud over style and policy that did not end with the senator's illness and death. The episode highlighted the outsider president's impulse to harbour personal resentments regardless of political repercussions.

He died Saturday of an aggressive form of brain cancer.

The Russell Senate Office Building is where U.S. Senators' offices are housed.

"We owe it to the McCain family to talk about John McCain and his contributions to the country and not anything else", Isakson said, "and that's what I intend to do". Those Republicans who supported Donald Trump during the 2016 primary season (more than half of all Republicans) are less willing to grant McCain hero status.

McCain, the GOP's 2008 presidential candidate and longtime party leadership figure, and Trump - a political neophyte whose now wide grip on the party dates back less than two years- had always been rivals.

The late Senator served in Congress for more than three decades and was widely admired for his patriotism and military service in the Vietnam War.

Bees besiege Times Square
Lauriano couldn't immediately say where the massive group of bees would be taken, but noted that officials will find them a hive. What's it doing in the middle of town?" People react to a swarm of bees in Times Square in New York City, U.S., August 28, 2018.

There were the bad dad jokes McCain liked to tell.

The former senator said McCain had "been to more countries, knew more foreign leaders and had a better grasp of history than any other American official, including our secretaries of state".

Against that backdrop, the flag above the White House spoke volumes.

The two Republicans shared a bond over their military backgrounds; both believed in the need for US military intervention in foreign conflicts and grew close traveling the world together. Shortly before Trump issued his written statement, the flag was lowered again to half-staff. Most Republicans want to see an invitation for the current President.

At McCain's public memorial in the Capitol on Saturday, former presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama (the two men who defeated him in presidential campaigns) will deliver eulogies at his service. Almost as many say President Trump should be invited to the funeral for John McCain as say he should not be invited.

"My guess is, it came from Cindy", says a source close to the McCain family.

On Sunday, McCain is to be buried at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, in a private ceremony.

Suddenly a McCain-Palin endorsement flashes across the screen, pumping up the white haired senator and his erstwhile sidekick-the future star of such shows as "Sarah Palin's Alaska" and "Amazing America with Sarah Palin".

The Senate should spend time finding "the right way" to memorialize McCain's service, Perdue said.

Arizona's first responders lined the plaza as the Arizona National Guard team carried McCain inside the Capitol.

After serving in the House for four years, McCain ran for the Senate and won. I have had experiences, adventures and friendships enough for ten satisfying lives, and I am so thankful. Just a few weeks ago the president signed into law a defence bill named in honour of the senator without a single mention of his name.

Google has pushed back sharply on Trump's claims.
