Stocks, emerging market currencies rise on planned US-China trade talks

The investment package was announced after Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani met President Tayyip Erdogan in the capital, as Turkey grapples with a collapsing lira and a worsening commercial and political standoff with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally the United States.

The lira has lost almost 40 percent of its value against the dollar this year, sparking a sell-off in emerging market currencies and weighing on global stocks.

US Treasury chief Steven Mnuchin earlier said the US could put more sanctions on Turkey.

Many countries have been the target of similar United States trade measures, Albayrak said, and Turkey would navigate this period with other parties such as Germany, Russia and China.

In remarks at Thursday's Cabinet meeting, Trump voiced his disappointment with Turkey in personal terms, saying the country has "not proven to be a good friend". The embattled currency weakened in early London trading, with one dollar buying 5.86 lira, but has just recovered to 5.8, up 0.26%.

"Turkey has been a problem for a long time", Trump said to reporters as he left the White House.

He also said some of the "red-lines" that Iran had designated in the nuclear deal were crossed, but did not specify which ones. He did not discuss the range of the missile, but older versions like the Fateh-313 have a range of some 500 kilometres.

President Trump is ramping his attacks up on Turkey, claiming the country has taken advantage of the US for many years.

Turkish Finance Minister Berat Albayrak held a conference call in which he assured worldwide investors that the country would emerge stronger from its currency crisis and that its banks were healthy. The U.S. says the pastor is "a victim of unfair and unjust detention."

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan tweeted: "On behalf of the Turkish people, I sincerely thank Sheikh Tamim and the Qatari people for standing by Turkey".

Turkey has accused Brunson of espionage and having ties to the Kurdistan Workers Party and the movement led by cleric Fethullah Gulen.

Erdogan, hinting at a trade for Brunson, said in a speech previous year that if the USA turned over Gülen to the Turkish authorities "we will do what we can in the judiciary to give you this one".

The Turkish court in Izmir upheld a lower-court decision that rejected lifting Brunson's house arrest, according to the state-run Anadolu agency.

When asked if she felt we, as a society, were moving forward, she said, "I think that we have come a very, very long way". Using these techniques, as she did with Respect , lyrics could be repositioned to reflect the black female perspective.

Obviously this raises the stakes of the United States imposing more sanctions.

Trump added the pastor is a "very innocent man" and "we got somebody out for him - he needed help getting somebody out of some place".

"Turkey's been a problem for a long time", Trump told reporters as he departed the White House on Friday for a fundraiser in NY.

The turmoil has raised fears of a looming economic crisis in Turkey and prompted alarm that foreign investors in the country, including Qatar, could be hit in the fallout.

Turkey's currency has come under pressure due to rising diplomatic tensions and cooling trade relations with the US, Erdogan's perceived control over the country's central bank, and a strong US dollar.
