Mike Pence calls for creation of Space Force by 2020

Mike Pence expected to announce plans for ‘Space Force’ in U.S. military

Trump administration tout groundwork for future 'space force'

Vice President Pence followed up by announcing Thursday at the Pentagon that the administration will seek to create the Space Force as the sixth branch of the military, to be established by 2020.

Creating a new branch of the military will require Congress' approval, so the Trump administration will work with lawmakers to include the statutory authority for Space Force in the fiscal 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, the vice president said.

"Third, the report calls for a new joint organization - the Space Development Agency - that will ensure the men and women of the Space Force have the cutting-edge warfighting capabilities that they need and deserve", he said.

In the meantime, the Space Command would be led by a four-star general, and Pence said a new high-level civilian post - assistant defense secretary for space - would also be created.

Space Force received a bipartisan endorsement Thursday from Rep. Mike Rogers, Repiblican from Alabama., and Rep. Jim Cooper, Democrat from Tennessee.

A Space Force, he added, "will meet the emerging threats on this new battlefield with American ingenuity and strength to defend our nation, protect our people and carry the cause of liberty and peace into the next great American frontier".

Democratic Senator Brian Schatz said on Twitter that Space Force "won't happen".

Currently, the Air Force oversees most space capabilities and there is some push back from officials who worry Space Force's mission would be duplicative and create turf wars.

The White House has officially laid the groundwork for Space Force, the Trump administration's efforts to expand the USA armed forces into outer space.

However Mattis has since echoed support for Trump's position, saying Tuesday that he was "in complete alignment with the president's concern about protecting our assets in space that contribute to our security, to our economy".

But just past year, Mattis voiced skepticism on the need to create a separate Space Force.

"There will be no Millennium Falcon, no Jedis or Wookiees we are sad to report", the Fox News host said. "We must have American dominance in space".

It's 2018 and Space Force is, somehow, a real thing.

"Both China and Russian Federation have been conducting highly sophisticated on-orbit activities that could enable them to maneuver their satellites into close proximity of ours, posing unprecedented new dangers to our space systems", Pence said. Except Mars has nothing to do with Trump's proposed Space Force and none of them are as fun as the ones that Bloomberg came up with.

"This report is a step in a multi-year process that we think will result in a safer, stronger America", the statement reads.

"Recently our adversaries have been working to bring new weapons of war into space itself", Pence said.
