A team of former Dota 2 pros just got owned by AI bots

They are so well-coordinated and focused on teamwork that it was almost impossible for any of the human players to single a bot out.

After demonstrating its prowess in Dota 2 1v1 games, the newly enhanced "OpenAI Five" has shown that it can thrash even the best human teams.

It only lost a game series when it had its "heroes" selected by audience members watching the action unfold, and those selected characters severely handicapped the OpenAI Five. OpenAI's five-on-five bot team has been in development all year, and last month it was beating amateur teams, according to OpenAI's developers, but this was the first bout against real pros: Former player Ben "Merlini" Wu, former player Ioannis "Fogged" Loucas, caster Austin "Capitalist" Walsh, former player William "Blitz" Lee and current pro David "MoonMeander" Tan.

Brockman added that to overcome these challenges, the bots had to be able to develop "intuitions" about their human opponents, improvise in response to unfamiliar situations, and collaborate with one another.

As you might have heard, Elon Musk's OpenAI initiative had plans to play against some professional DotA 2 players in a bid to test how good AI can be at teamwork.
