The American Jewish Committee said it was "deeply disappointed" that the Knesset passed the law.

This is the crux of the problem of the law - it does not address minorities whatsoever, neither their collective nor individual rights.

Ahmed Majdalani, a senior PLO official in Ramallah, said that the nation-state law "exposed the true face of the state of terrorism, fascism and racism".

The Jewish Nation-State Bill, passed just after the state marked the 70th anniversary of its birth, was hailed as a "defining moment in the annals of Zionism" by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Four years in the making, the legislation was packaged as a basic law and joins a dozen other powerful laws that form Israel's constitution.

Netanyahu said, "We enshrined in law the basic principle of our existence. Palestinian Civil Society Reacts to Israel's Jewish Nation-State Law".

Jeremy Ben Ami, president of J Street, a Washington liberal pro-Israel group, said the bill's objective is "to send a message to the Arab community, the LGBT community and other minorities in Israel, that they are not and never will be equal citizens".

Arab leaders called for global intervention against the Israeli government Thursday after it passed landmark legislation harming the status of the Arab minority and raising comparisons to apartheid.

It said it "seeks to maintain a regime in which one ethnic-national group controls an indigenous-national group living in the same territory while advancing ethnic superiority by promoting racist policies".

Arab citizens account for some 17.5 per cent of Israel's more than eight million population.

Opposition parties even mocked this possibility by suggesting an amendment that would add the language "The objective of this Basic Law is to please the electorate on the right before elections" to the bill.

"This is not a decision I expected from the Likud leadership", he said. It's even demoting our language from one of the state's two official languages.

A law passed Tuesday places limits on Palestinian access to Israel's High Court of Justice, redirecting administrative claims, for example over land or property rights, to the District Court.

Palestinians have long demanded to have their own state in the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem, which were occupied during the 1967 war.

He claimed the Russians also attempted to hack into the Republican National Committee, "but we had much better defenses". Noting that "mutual interests abound", he said he gave specific suggestions on dealing with crises under discussion.

The bill has bitterly divided Israeli lawmakers, with some arguing that the law will institutionalise "apartheid" rule in Israel.

Lawmakers took turns to passionately express their views in a rowdy, hours-long debate in parliament overnight. Palestinians have seen some successes in proving ownership over land now being used for Israeli settlements. "We will remain steadfast holding on tightly to the historic, national and human rights of our people, wherever they are, including by fully ending the Israeli occupation by freeing the state of Palestine on the 1967 border, with east Jerusalem as its capital, as well as fulfilling all our rights based on global law, including the refugee issue in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 194". This isn't highly controversial, at least not among Jewish Israelis. Israel shall always remain a strong, proud and vibrant democracy, and there is nothing in this law that will diminish that.

"The term is so broad that it may apply to any institution, organization, and activist who has met with a member of parliament, foreign institution, or political body", he said.

Demonstrators attend a rally to protest against the Jewish "nation state" bill in the Israeli coastal city of Tel Aviv on July 14, 2018.

Tibi and virtually every other member of the opposition - Israeli and Arab - had lambasted the nation-state bill as, at best, unnecessary and, at worst, blatantly discriminatory.

Another piece of controversial legislation aimed at removing and restricting online content defined by the authorities as inciting against Israel was withdrawn at the last-minute Wednesday by Netanyahu.
