Tropical Storm Chris to bring showers

Hurricane Beryl weakened to a tropical storm on Saturday.

Jaime Ruiz, a 54-year-old corrections officer who lives nearby, said Monday's storm was disrupting efforts to rebuild his home that was heavily damaged by Maria.

Gov. Ricardo Rossello says the rains are likely to continue for another 10 to 12 hours, hitting hardest in the east.

As of Monday afternoon, there were almost 13,000 power outages, a total that included customers who remain without service since Hurricane Maria last September, according to Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. It said winds would fall below gale force during the night, but people on area islands should be alert for possible heavy rain that could cause flooding or mudslides.

Chris, third tropical storm of the 2018 season, became a depression on Friday afternoon.

Tropical Storm Beryl disintegrated after rushing over Dominica and into the eastern Caribbean, but the U.S. National Hurricane Center said the remnants still could bring 2 to 3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters) of rain pounding down on homes in Puerto Rico still damaged by September's Hurricane Maria. It wasn't projected to directly threaten land over the next few days, though forecasters said it could kick up unsafe surf and rip tides. Rossello, who said the island could experience power outages, urged people without sturdy roofs to move in with relatives or a government shelter.

Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit had warned people to respect an island-wide curfew and remain indoors.

Meteorologist Marshall Alexander told The Associated Press that officials were anxious about those living with tarps on their roofs after Maria slammed into Dominica as a Category 5 storm previous year, killing dozens of people. Lourdes De Jesus, who traveled from West Springfield, Massachusetts, to help fix her mother's house in southeast Yabucoa, said the roof consists of tarp and recycled zinc and leaks even during a light storm.

Lugo lost his roof and two walls to Maria and was waiting for volunteers to secure his new roof before Beryl.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Chris was squatting on Monday about 215 miles (345 kilometers) off the coast of the Carolinas.

Forecasters said conditions somewhat conducive for regeneration of a tropical cyclone are expected as Beryl is forecast to move across the Bahamas and the western Atlantic.
