Thursday Marks the Summer Solstice

Google is marking the start of summer with a new Doodle dedicated to the 2018 summer solstice.

"As the longest day of the year, solstice marks the official start of the summer season". The solstice will happen at 6:07 a.m. June 21.

Thousands of people gathered at Stonehenge for the summer solstice, as the sun rose amid clear skies. It's thought that this 5,000-year-old monument is aligned to the Summer Solstice because on this day (and a few days on either side) the sun rises above its Heel Stone.

Federer reclaims No. 1 from Nadal
According to the BBC, the 36-year-old Federer beat the Raonic 6-4, 7-6 in the final match played on Sunday. A match played in good spirits, with Kyrgios's respect for Federer showing in everything he did.

How Does Summer Solstice Work?

Although it's not a visual phenomenon, the summer solstice occurs in the early morning on the east coast of the U.S. That makes it possible to watch a summer solstice sunrise from anywhere with a low view to the eastern horizon.

Up to 25,000 people were expected to attend the overnight celebration of the longest day of the year at the World Heritage Site.

Robert Lewandowski - Poland 'not effective' in loss to Senegal
Compounding the worries for African supporters is that, aside from Senegal , the continent's five teams largely aren't scoring. Former global Adam Nawałka has done well with the side, helping them qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 12 years.

Following the winter solstice, the Northern Hemisphere begins to get more sunlight; the daytime and nighttime hours are almost equal at the spring equinox, which takes place in March.

Even today, visitors flock to see the solstice at Stonehenge.

It's when the tilt of the Earth's axis is most inclined towards the sun on this date giving us the longest day, with the sun setting at Stonehenge at 9.27pm tonight which means we'll get more than 16 and a half hours of daylight! Even that's an approximation - Earth's atmosphere bends light over the horizon by different amounts depending on weather, which can introduce changes of more than a minute to sunrise and sunset times.
