Visa systems operating at 'close to' normal levels after severe disruption

"It is a Visa credit and debit card issue that is affecting us intermittently".

The company wrote in a statement: 'Our goal is to ensure all Visa cards work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The issues reportedly arose after the Visa card network experienced severe disruptions today.

Millions of shops and businesses across the United Kingdom are unable to process Visa card payments due to a nationwide outage in the Visa network. Visa, which acquired Visa Europe in 2016, is a vital backbone for payments in the United Kingdom and the rest of Europe.

The extent of the problem is not clear, but Visa customers across Europe have been complaining on Twitter that payments have been denied.

Visa said some card payments are now failing across the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe.

The blockage has left some customers stuck at the tills in stores across the continent.

By around 10pm Visa said service returned to normal saying the issue was a result of a hardware failure. We'd encourage affected customers to try contactless transactions where possible. Visa says it's aware of the problem and developing a fix, which might be working already.

Long lines were reported at train stations on Friday and businesses lost sales because customers' cards were declined, MarketWatch reported.
