The Kremlin said it would be opened to cars on Wednesday, and the rail section was due to be completed at the end of 2019.

Dutch prosecutors opened a criminal investigation into seven Dutch companies that allegedly supplied machines and other services for the bridge construction in violation of European Union sanctions on Russia, The Moscow Times reported 4 May. "But Crimea is Russia", the Russian embassy said in a statement.

The blocks imposed by Kiev and Western sanctions have meant a large amount of food is transported from Russian Federation to Crimea by ship, meaning the bridge will play an important role in reducing the region's reliance on sea transport.

"Russia's construction of the bridge serves as a reminder of Russia's ongoing willingness to flout global law", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said, Agence France-Presse reported. He chatted to workmen in overalls and drove a heavy, orange truck across the bridge's 19 kilometers length. An Instagram star with 35,000 followers, Mostik posted a photo of himself, or herself, proudly strutting across the bridge, one day before Putin's much-ballyhooed journey. In a separate written statement, she pointed out that Washington condemns the construction and partial opening of the Crimean Bridge, which was done without the Ukrainian government's authorization.

Nauert reminded the United States had sanctioned numerous individuals and entities involved in this project. "Well - probably they did create certain difficulties, but we've overcome them and these difficulties made us unite".

North Korea says it will dismantle nuclear test site later this month
North Korea has invited the outside world to witness the dismantling of its nuclear facilities before. Pompeo said he had "good" talks with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, BBC reports.

Putin highlighted the achievement when he visited the site in March and hailed the "mighty" bridge. "We will make our peoples' lives better and more comfortable", Putin said.

The focus on Putin's role, however, also hinted at a less flattering reality: the untold number of poor roads, railroads and bridges across the country that don't benefit from the president's personal patronage.

Across the country, Russians complain of corruption and poor execution hindering much-needed public works repairs and infrastructure projects.
