North Haven officials say the blast happened at a barn behind a home Wednesday night while police were negotiating with a man who had taken his wife hostage.
When police officers are involved, he says there is "heightened" concern.
Police said Thursday the remains of one person were found in the home after the fire had been largley extinguished.
The structure burned through Wednesday night into Thursday morning as emergency responders from several communities worked to contain it. Flames from the barn spread to other nearby structures, authorities said, although they could not confirm who owned them. The remains are now unidentified. The office of the chief medical examiner will be examining the body to determine who the person is and how and when they died.

She said when police responded to the report and approached the home, officers found a man now described as a "barricaded suspect".
After first responders arrived, an explosion occurred in the barn behind the home, police said.
"The last they knew was that he was a baracaded subject", Grant said.

Police have said that human remains were found this morning at 385 Quinnipiac Avenue, where a police standoff and explosion happened last night resulting in injuries to nine law enforcement officers.
All nine officers remained hospitalized Thursday. Two East Haven officers have been released from the hospital.
Also, police say residents will not be able to access side streets in the area either.
Video shows officers rushing to the scene and a raging fire.
He said the police "were trying to coax him... out of the house and really try to calm the situation down". The remains have not been identified, and it's unknown if it is the suspect.
Kelly says that a woman had called police to report domestic violence before the explosion Wednesday night. "Obviously a lot of fire damage, so there is going to be a lot of collecting evidence and sifting through and seeing what we have out there". "Many of these patients needed the same tests, they needed the same studies, we needed to get them to certain places in the hospital". "We hope to be out of this area sometime later today and I think that will send a strong indication as to where we are with the investigation". More than 30 New Haven SWAT and Bomb Squad officers were assisting in the standoff. "Then things took a turn for the worse with an explosion".
The official initially said that she was being held against her will during Wednesday's incident, but police later said it was not a hostage situation. "It was just unbelievable", said another.
